Belated World Rat Day

Ok, so I know it was yesterday, but I still wanted to mention World Rat Day.

As the proud keeper of 2 current rats, and the former owner of many more over the years I wanted to remind everyone that rats are brilliant pets.

Their tails aren’t cold and slimy, they are warm, furry and frequently used to curl around your wrists whilst riding in your arms. They’re affectionate, clean (though male rat urine can be a bit smelly if you don’t clean them out enough) clever and rewarding ratty pets.

So don’t delay, give some rats a home from your local shelter. You won’t regret it.

As a previous owner of a lovely white rat (when I was a mere child) I know there are differences in rats per se, but I hope you won’t be too shocked and appalled that my husband has out rat traps by our deck because we have been having a flock of them for months now. He catches one almost every night. Bait: peanut butter. With a nice Chianti and some fava beans…

I realy must find my photos of my beloved Rancid and Cuddles (I had them as a student back in the 80s). I would love to have rats again but I can think of four good reasons not to: Robyn, Ted, Bebe, Mimi.. well three reasons, poor Mimi couldn’t catch a cold…

I might not mind a white one. We get the odd rattus norvegicus here at the farm though, and somehow having one indoors doesn’t tempt me. Huge, brown/grey things… But happy belated day to all rats…
