Mackenzie Fraser Marriages

Posted by Alison under: Genealogy; History .

I have previously posted about Charles and Jane Mackenzie Fraser and the family they went on to have.

Now it is the turn of their children, here I will post details of their marriages and children. Sadly, this doesn’t go much further on in time, as the family now seems to have died out.

Eleanor Jane Mackenzie Fraser married Rev. George Tomlinson, First Bishop of Gibraltar, in 1855, as what must have been a very middle-aged bride by those standards! It was George’s second marriage. They had 3 children: Eleanor Fraser Tomlinson b1856, George Charles James Tomlinson b1857, and Mary Elizabeth Tomlinson b1858. Sadly, both Eleanor and her husband George were to die in 1858 and 1863, leaving the children in the care of their Uncle Fred (Mackenzie Fraser) at Castle Fraser. Young George is though to have died young, however both Ellie and May lived to adulthood, Ellie marrying another clergyman by the name of Thomas Denman Croft and whose son, also Thomas, was to have inherited Castle Fraser, but ultimately declined in favour of the Pope(!). May never married, but later wrote a much romanticized account of her time at the Castle. Both the girls were extremely fond of their Aunt Blanche, though it is not recorded what they made of their ‘new’ Aunt Theodora.

Frederick Mackenzie Fraser firstly married Lady Blanche Drummond (who I have spoken about several times before) the daughter of the Earl of Perth. Her full name, I have to mention for the sheer grandeur of it! Lady Marie Augusta Gabrielle Berengere Blanche Drummond. They were married in 1871, several months after the death of Col. Charles, and when Fred had come into his inheritance. I have no current record of when Blanche became ill with Comsumption - or TB, but it was in 1874 that she finally died, leaving Fred a widower with no children. After travelling for several years, he later married Theodora Lovett Darby of Leap Castle in Ireland (a very haunted place, by the way) in 1879. The too, were unable to have any children, and it was Theodora, in 1921, who was to sell the Castle. Fred died in 1897.

Augusta Charlotte Mackenzie Fraser married Robert Drummond (who came from a famous Banking family) in 1854. Fortunately for this couple, the had several children and both lived fairly long lives dying in 1911 and 1881 respectively. Their children were: Charles b 1855, Sybil b1858, Wingfield Fraser b1861 and Kenneth Mackenzie b1862. I am still searching for more information about the other 3, but Charles is fairly well documented. He married Lady Caroline Boyle in 1892, and had children: Angela Cecilia 1893-1932, Robert Charles 1896-1917 (KIA) and Angus Julian 1910-1997. Out of these only Angus married, though in 1961, and there were no children. Thus here my tale ends - at least for now!

Lastly though, I will tell you that Charles and Jane were only outlived by 3 of their children. Strangely enough, it was 2 of the ones who married, Fred and Augusta, plus also their unmarried sister Harriet. I would say that perhaps marriage helped, but sadly it was more Consumption was rife!
